Hull Telephones

In the beginning there were many separate telephone companies within the U.K. some municipal corporations ran their own systems. In 1911 all but Hull were nationalised and were taken over by the General Post Office (GPO) a government department. To distinguish the Hull Corporation boxes, they were painted a cream colour. The GPO's Kiosk No.6 has a crown above the windows whereas the Hull variety do not as they are not crown property.

This Kiosk No.8 photographed on a street in Hull in 2025 is still a working telephone box and retains the cream coloured paint.
The kiosk was designed by Bruce Martin for the GPO and normally painted red. Very few of the Red Kiosks remain as their large windows made them susceptible to vandalism.
