What are Devon Called Changes?
These are a fixed pattern of calling changes to move five bells around. The pattern is cyclic which makes it easier to memorise. The sequence starts from Queens (135246) and after 60 calls returns to Queens. At the start, the conductor calls the bells from Rounds into Queens, then at the end calls the bells back into rounds before standing the bells.
The Pattern of Calls
This table illustrates the cyclic nature of the calls. The treble is moved up to fifth place, then another bell is moved up one place and the treble called down to lead. The 'another' bell is moved up a place. The pattern repeats with the treble hunting up and down fifths place, each time it leads or gets to fifth place the 'another' bell is moved up. When it gets to fifth place, a new 'another' bell receives the same treatment.
- Firstly the No.3 Bell which is in second place is moved out to fifth place.
- The No.5 is the bell in second place, so its moved out to fifth place.
- The No.2 is at the front, so it is the next to be moved out to fifth place.
- The No.4 is in second place, its the last to be moved out and when it gets to fifths place, we are back to ringing Queens again.
